Director's Message (continued from Home):
"You're too old to drive." There, I said it. They are the words no one
wants to hear, but someday someone will say them to you. But if I tell you this
now, there's still time for you to prove me wrong by taking certain steps to
forestall the future. Or would you prefer to hear it some time later directly
from your family and friends in a moment of harsh reality?
"People don't plan to fail - rather, they just fail to
plan."
By now everyone has heard about the tragic car accident killing 10 people while
being driven by an elderly gentleman. No doubt this issue is a concern to
everyone, but more especially to you and your family because it relates to your
INDEPENDENCE. Maintaining your autonomy (keeping YOUR choices for what YOU want)
and independence are key to a happy and fulfilling retirement. So the natural
question becomes: How can we avoid similar tragic accidents while maintaining
the privilege to drive? And statistics aside, which I won't bore you with, it is
our own personal responsibility to be sure we are a safe driver. This doesn't
mean just drive defensively either!
The statistics place senior drivers on the same dangerous level as the group of
hormonal teenagers (which we all were at one point) fresh from Drivers' Ed
class. Either everyone gets more randy as they age or something else is
happening.
So... Which is it??
I doubt Pfizer stocks would be doing anything interesting if the former were
true, so let's look at the facts. "With age comes wisdom." Score one
over the teenagers there. But being wise doesn't make you a safer driver. Being
wise means being truthful to yourself by recognizing some possible physical
limitations that could be hampering your driving skills. The "Health"
area of this website offers a number of diverse health related issues to help
you deal with many different topics. But, particular to this driving issue are
some basic health tips to increase your physical capabilities while driving.
"I didn't see the other driver coming!"
#1 - Really this deals with multiple issues, but most people relate it to their
eyesight instead of possibly your neck too. Research shows that gentle
stretching preserves flexibility. Flexibility is a vital factor in performing
activities such as dressing, bathing, DRIVING, and various household chores.
So before you drive, gently stretch your neck from side to side (with your
doctor's permission) so that you may increase your flexibility and your ability
to look to the sides for hazardous traffic situations.
#2 - Get your eyes checked on a regular basis. The human eye is a remarkable
organ, but while some eye problems are readily apparent others are not. Aside
from possible night vision impairments and peripheral vision impairments, the
four major eye diseases for seniors are macular degeneration, cataracts,
glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Regular checkups and early diagnosis are
extremely important to maintaining your independence and preserving your
eyesight.
#3 - When there are known physical issues that may affect your driving, there
are often devices that can be added onto your vehicle which will facilitate the
use and safety of driving. Check with your doctor about any devices that may be
of assistance to your driving.
Lastly, Americans generally equate driving as the ultimate expression of their
independence. Nobody wants to hear what I first told you at the top of this
column. So it's really up to you to take the extra steps needed to drive safely
and preserve your privilege to drive. This not only avoids the sorrows of
hurting others, it helps keep your independence before your family or the
politicians muck things up. Which would you prefer?
